Vaka Deck Framing

This entry was posted on 2/28/2007 11:38 AM and is filed under Build the Vaka Hull.

I'm back to working on the vaka.

This shows the deck framing just behind bulkead 51.

The rudder and leeboard came in the other day - VERY NICE.  Phil's Foils did a great job.

I also did a bit of work on the amas and began to shape the top to accept the deck.

Chief: What material are you using for your deck frame? What is the foil construction?

Any light soft wood is OK for the deck framing.  My local Lowes has some real nice clear pine 1x2 stock (.75 x 1.5 actual) in various lengths so that is what I used for the carlins.  For the beams I used the same clear pine but 1x4 stock cut to the proper curve of the deck.

Some of the carlins need to be long and a bit stronger.  For those I use clear Doublas Fir (it's stronger) ripped from 1x6 stock 12 feet long.  I used the same boards to rip the boom parts at the same time.

You'd have to ask Phil for the exact foil construction but if I remember right they are machined from laminated wood blanks and then carbon and glass.  Extra glass is on the leading edge.  Phil really does nice work and will be making all the Tridarka Raider foils which we will sell to builders.  I will also be discussing the tiller and maybe the akas too.
