Building the Vaka

Mounting the Amas

This entry was posted on 6/4/2007 9:59 AM and is filed under Build the Amas.

Progress has been slow due to factors beyond my control and having nothing to do with the actual progress.

The good news is that the vaka is done except for final painting.

I'm now working on mounting the amas.

This shows the akas lashed to the vaka and the port ama being held in position with some cargo straps.  I am setting up the ama fore and aft and at the correct angle of 6 degrees from vertical.  Once the ama is in position I can mark the location of the mounting blocks.

The next step is to bond the mounting blocks to the amas.  I need some lag bolts with lengths not available locally so will order online.  While that is going on I will start painting the final coat on the vaka.

      Chief,
Maybe you can buy lag bolts longer than needed and cut them to length with a hack saw.

Yes, but I need longer bolts than what is available locally.  I have a very good online source and the bolts I need will be here tomorrow.
